Résumé :

This presentation is going to deal with the philosophy of Kitarô Nishida (1870-1945), who is known as the first Japanese “philosopher.” Especially, I want to focus on his theory about “Self.”

Some studies about Nishida have emphasized “Non-self” on his writings. In their readings, Nishida insists that our Self, which is expressed by a subjective word are some sort of an illusion. The only real existence is the moving direct experience and “Self” as the subjective word is a result of a negative abstraction from the living experience. Of course, this thesis of Nishida is an important issue. However when we think about Nishida’s later philosophy, the more important point is below; “Self” is also an illusion in Nishida’s later thought, however it is an indispensable illusion. Simply, we must say “I” whether it is an illusion or not. This view relates to “doxa” or “contradiction” on his later thought. Nishida constructs his middle and later philosophy with this “contradiction” between the moving informal experience (in his word, the true Self) and static subjective “I.”

The main topic of this presentation is the relation between a direct experience (the true Self) and static “I”. Moreover it strongly relates to his thought about time and space, his body-theory. To disentangle a complex relationship of discussions of Nishida, Nishida’s strange definition of “doxa” will lead this presentation. He sais about “doxa” in Self-definition of Nothingness(無の自覚的限定)(1931)”.
Contents of belief is the contents of definition by body, which cannot be expressed as the content of “Idea”. Various contents of practical beliefs are also constructed as contents of bodily definitions. So-called social contents are alike. Every “doxa” which we can think is constructed by this way. (Collective works of Nishida Kitarô, vol. 6, Iwanami Shoten, 1948, p. 79)
In Nishida’s philosophy, “doxa” is in a more profound position than “idea” and he thinks about the problem of social and practice by the connection with “doxa”. And he says “doxa” as the content of “bodily definition”. “Body definition” is his concept and it relates to the problem of time and space. The purpose of this presentation is to clarify the “Self” on Nishida or relating concepts to its theory and to search for some clues for contemporary philosophical researches.

Tanabe Hajime and the Fundamental Problems of the Philosophy of Religion

Résumé :

This presentation aims to respond to the fundamental problems of the philosophy of religion through one of Tanabe Hajime's later works entitled Philosophy as Metanoetics (1947). To elucidate the problems, I will firstly summarize Kierkegaard's four-fold critique of the Kantian and the Hegelian philosophy of religion and secondly explain the significance of these problems for the general context of the philosophy of religion. To interpret the ways in which Tanabe's would respond to these problems, moreover, I would refer to some of the central notions that Tanabe develops in Philosophy and Metanoetics and thereby explain how they could help us overcome the limitation of universal rationalism inherent in Kant's and Hegel's works on religion. It is certainly impossible to solve the major problems of the philosophy of religion in one presentation but I hope to set up the platform which we can anticipate the solutions to the problems from the viewpoint of Tanabe's metanoetics.
